Joséphine Ancelle, pop folk singer and songwriter reached new octaves of her musical journey with the success of her EP, The I Love Yous and with her second music video for the single Les "Je T'Aime". The song received steady airplay in the Paris metro market on influential stations such as Radio Néo and Vallée FM , Les "Je T’Aime" was also at the first song featured on the French Sentier Des Halles compilation album.
Joséphine Ancelle left her Paris home at the tender age of 17, moving to Montreal in pursuit of her dream—a career in music. Her two years there found her making major strides toward this goal, recording a Vibe-Award winning album with the People's Gospel Choir of Montréal, and also singing in a Narta television commercial airing in France. She soon realized she had to make another move to chase her dream.
Upon arriving in New York, Joséphine co-wrote, recorded and independently released her first album, Unfinished Life, in November 2007. She quickly made an impact on the local scene in New York, playing famed venues such as The Bitter End, The Living Room, Crash Mansion, The Sidewalk Cafe and Cafe Vivaldi. Appearances on NYC TV, mentions in publications such as Time Out New York and Metro New York, some stateside airplay on online radio and podcasts, and the development of her music video for "I Think of You" followed. The FIAF (French Institute - Alliance Française) even calls on her talents to participate in their Bastille Day concerts in the Big Apple as well as for other events.
Joséphine's mostly guitar-based and frequently bi-lingual pop-folk songs are highly personal and complex, often balancing introspection and vulnerability with jubilance and confidence. Her sound has been compared favorably to Lisa Loeb and can be described as Sixpence None The Richer interpreted by Ingrid Michaelson and Yael Naim. Wildy Haskell, renowned blogger of Wildy’s World, states that "Ancelle has one of those voices where you just hope she never stops singing," and muses, "There is something incredibly pure and heartfelt about Ancelle's singing style … It's just pure emotion, honest written and transfer from heart to voice and heart to guitar."
Joséphine continues to entertain fans on the world stage. She performed with her band at the renowned Sentier Des Halles in Paris in September and December of 2009 to introduce the songs of The I Love Yous. When released in September, The I Love Yous received rave media reviews on both sides of the Atlantic.
Since, she was invited to play again in Paris a few times including at the famous Réservoir. She has just recently performed at the well established New York SongCircle showcase at the Bitter End and her song "Les Je t'aime" has been getting ongoing radio airplay since the end of August in Germany.
In December 2010, following up her success to The I Love Yous, Joséphine Ancelle released a new selection of hits, entitled Ends With Always, recorded in Nashville with renowned producer, Paul Umbach. She is currently promoting the new album while preparing a tour for the Fall 2011 that will take her from the US West Coast to London and Paris.
Comme les pays, certains artistes sont appelés « émergents ». Jusqu’à aujourd’hui, c’est dans cette catégorie fourre-tout que la critique a placé Joséphine Ancelle.
Pourtant, si l’on demande à la communauté grandissante de fans qui suit cette chanteuse française de 25 ans new-yorkaise d’adoption, Joséphine a déjà sa place au G7 de la musique. Son innocence touche. Sa voix fragile envoûte (on compare sa musique à celle de Yaël Naïm). Ses chansons, autant d’hymnes à l’amour et aux plaisirs simples de la vie, séduisent. Et puis, peu de personnes peuvent se targuer à son jeune âge d’avoir réalisé la bande-son d’une pub Narta et commencé une carrière musicale à New York !
Native de Paris, elle a grandi dans une famille à l’ADN en forme de clé de sol. Sa grand-mère et arrière grand-mère étaient chanteuses. Son père chanteur de variété. Son frère aîné est pianiste. Ado, Joséphine Ancelle a l’oreille fine et la tête ailleurs. Elle veut avoir l’Amérique. Arrivée à New York fin 2004 après un détour par Montréal où elle fait ses vocalises dans une chorale de gospel réputée, elle multiplie les apparitions remarquées dans les salles de concert de la « Grosse pomme ». Elle sème sur son chemin musical des notes de joie, de légèreté et de mélancolie, toujours avec une sensibilité frappante, forgée sans doute sur la route - elle est partie de chez elle à 17 ans. Ses deux premiers CD, Unfinished Life (2007) et The I Love Yous (2009) mettent la critique française et américaine d’accord : elle est acclamée des deux côtés de l’Atlantique.
En décembre 2010, au Living Room, pépinière à talents du Lower East Side de Manhattan, Joséphine a révélé son dernier bébé, Ends with Always. une compilation de tubes en français et en anglais enregistrés à Nashville avec le réalisateur renommé Paul Umbach. Le titre de ce dernier album invite à la rêverie. Pour Joséphine, il signifie que tout ne fait que commencer.

En tant que bénévole pour l’association Musicians On Call (www.musiciansoncall.org), Joséphine est fière de jouer régulièrement dans les services d’oncologie des hôpitaux new-yorkais, avec l’espoir d’apporter à travers sa musique un peu de réconfort aux personnes dans le besoin.
